Research assistants

Ranya Adnan

Louis Consigli

Louis is a sophomore (’28) at Bates College working as a research assistant in the Memory Dynamics Lab. He is from Milford, Massachusetts and is studying Neuroscience on the pre-med track. Recently, he has been interested in studying neurodegenerative disorders and traumatic brain injuries in younger populations. Outside of the lab, Louis works as a personal care assistant and is a member of both the crew team and the club hockey team.

Madeline Conta

Nick Danko

Nick is a junior (’27) from Newtown, PA. He plans to major in Psychology and History. In history, he is specifically interested in post World War II reconstruction. In psychology, he enjoys studying neural processes such as memory and emotions, thinking about how they apply to youth development. He works as a staff writer for the Bates Student in addition to volunteering at Montello Elementary School and swimming.

Joe DiMartino

Joe is a junior (’27) from Westchester, NY and is excited to join the Memory Dynamics Lab. While majoring in Psychology with a concentration in Art and Visual Culture, he is pursuing the pre-medical track at Bates. He is interested in learning about neural circuitry for memory processes. He volunteers in hospice care and over the last year has shared his passion for photography with patients by creating photo flip books to enhance memory recall, encouraging reflection of lived experiences, and ultimately bolstering quality of life. He works as a patient transporter at St. Mary’s Hospital and will be one of the Managing Photography Editors for The Bates Student.

Eleanor Martin

Eleanor is a sophomore (’28) at Bates College and a research assistant in the Memory Dynamics Lab. She is from Oilville, Virginia and is majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Education on the pre-med track. Her academic interests center on memory processes and cognitive changes associated with concussions and post-concussion syndrome, particularly in athletes. Outside of the lab, Eleanor volunteers as an EMT, works with young students in after-school programs, and is a member of the women’s soccer team.

Luca Norquist

Tylan Ozkuzey

Tylan is a sophomore (’27) from Montclair, NJ, and is excited to contribute to the Memory Dynamics Lab. He plans on majoring in Biology while pursuing the pre-medical track at Bates. He is particularly interested in learning how memory and cognitive function are affected by physical trauma. He’s also interested in the brain-body connection and wants to learn more about how neural mechanisms related to memory, motor learning, and recovery can inform patient care in both athletic and clinical populations. He is on the Bates Men’s Tennis Team and works as a patient transporter at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Ariya Tayal

Ariya is a research assistant with the Memory Dynamics Lab and the Youth ACT Lab at Bates College. She is a senior (’26) from Pittsburgh, PA. At Bates, she is studying Neuroscience and is on the pre-med track while pursuing a minor in Chinese. She is interested in learning more about community-based research on providing equitable healthcare and research on neuropsychiatric disorders. She works as an Emergency Room Technician at Central Maine Medical Center and volunteers at Trinity Jubilee Soup Kitchen, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Wisdom Womens Center (Lewiston, ME).

Sarah Van Lonkhuyzen

Sarah is a research assistant for the Memory Dynamics Lab at Bates College. She is a junior (27’) from Rockport, Maine. She is majoring in Psychology and is especially interested in dream functions and mental disorders. She also holds a concentration in Psychology and Philosophy. Sarah has enjoyed volunteering at Montello Elementary School and Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen and has obtained the Community Service Seal upon completing 100 hours of community service.

Christopher Viza

Ryan Wiliani

Ryan is a sophomore at Bates College from Los Angeles, California, pursuing a Neuroscience major with Hispanic Studies and Chemistry minors on a pre dental track. He is interested in how optimal feedback control enables cognitive offloading through predictive and corrective computation, and how these mechanisms adapt or fail in the context of neurological injury and disease. Ryan is a certified EMT and serves as a ride safety ambassador for Bike MS, a national cycling event that raises funds for multiple sclerosis research. At Bates, he holds leadership roles in the Sailing Team, the Public Health Initiative, and Outfront.

Lab Mission

The Memory Dynamics Lab, part of the Neuroscience Program at Bates College, works to harness the mechanisms responsible for adaptively acquiring, retrieving, consolidating, and forgetting memories through cognitive neuroscience (including the study of human brainwaves and behavior while awake and asleep). In doing so, we aim to distill and disseminate strategies designed to help learners capitalize on these mental operations, allowing them to better remember when/what they want to remember and forget when/what they want to forget.
